This Trojan Spy arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan Spy adds the following processes:

  • net users
  • cmd.exe /c "net share ADMIN$ /delete"
  • cmd.exe /c "net share C$ /delete"
  • powershell.exe -noninteractive -Sta -encodedCommand {Base64 encoded}

This Trojan Spy gathers the following data:

  • IP Address
  • Computer Name
  • User Name
  • PS Remote details
  • Running Processes
  • Clipboard Details
  • Keyboard Details

Other Details

This Trojan Spy does the following:

  • It save clipboard activities to the following files:
    • %Application Data%\microsoft\cl.slog
  • It saves gathered information to the following files:
    • %Application Data%\microsoft\slog\top-{random character}\info.txt
  • It saves the keylogged details to the following files:
    • %Application Data%\microsoft\ke.slog
  • It uses the following parameter for cryptocurrency mining:
    • -a cryptonight -o pool.{BLOCKED}txmr.com:8080 -u {Base64 encoded} -p x
  • It stops sharing resources to the following share name:
    • ADMIN$
    • C$
  • It downloads the following file for cryptocurrency mining:
    • %Windows%\newxmr.exe .> renamed to %Windows%\xmr.exe
  • It downloads the following files:
    • %Windows%\commands.ps1
    • %Windows%\commands.{IP address}.ps1
  • It connects to the following URL to download files:
    • ftp://{BLOCKED}:001xd@{BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.48.126/newxmr.exe
    • ftp://{BLOCKED}:001xd@{BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.48.126/serv/commands.ps1
    • ftp://{BLOCKED}:001xd@{BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.48.126/serv/commands.{Machines IP address}.ps1
  • It uses the following credentials to access the URL and download the file:
    • Username: {BLOCKED}p
      Password: {BLOCKED}d
  • It connects to the following URL to get the machine IP address:
    • ifconfig.me/ip
  • It convert "%Application Data%\microsoft\slog\top-{random character}" to the following zip file to upload to the C&C server:
    • %Application Data%\microsoft\myzip.zip
  • It connects to the following URL to upload the ZIP file containing the recorded and gathered information of the system:
    • ftp://{BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.48.126/keys/

It uses the system's central processing unit (CPU) and/or graphical processing unit (GPU) resources to mine cryptocurrency. This behavior makes the system run abnormally slow.

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Step 3

Identify and terminate files detected as TrojanSpy.MSIL.ZILPOW.A

  1. Windows Task Manager may not display all running processes. In this case, please use a third-party process viewer, preferably Process Explorer, to terminate the malware/grayware/spyware file. You may download the said tool here.
  2. If the detected file is displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer but you cannot delete it, restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, refer to this link for the complete steps.
  3. If the detected file is not displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer, continue doing the next steps.
