This Ransomware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Ransomware drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %Temp%\{malware name}_{random numbers}.exe

(Note: %Temp% is the Windows temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\Temp on all Windows operating system versions.)

It drops the following files:

  • %Temp%\whytltozW8-0.cmd
  • %Temp%\whytltozW8-1.cmd
  • %Temp%\whytltozW8-2.cmd

(Note: %Temp% is the Windows temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\Temp on all Windows operating system versions.)

It adds the following processes:

  • "%Temp%\whytltozW8-0.cmd" %System%\vssadmin.exe
  • {malware path and filename} +
  • {malware name}_{random numbers} 1
  • {malware name}_{random numbers} 2

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

Ransomware Routine

This Ransomware appends the following extension to the file name of the encrypted files:

  • .m3gac0rtx

It drops the following file(s) as ransom note:

  • {Drive Letter}:\!-!_README_!-!.rtf
  • %Desktop%\!-!_README_!-!.rtf

(Note: %Desktop% is the current user's desktop, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{User Name}\Desktop on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\Desktop on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)

Step 1
