This Trojan arrives as an attachment to email messages spammed by other malware/grayware or malicious users.

It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

NOTES:

This is a specially crafted .PDF file that exploits a certain vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Acrobat. If this exploit is successful, it drops and executes the following file embedded in its body:

  • %UserTemp%\windowsupdate.exe

As a result, the routines of the said malware are also exhibited in the system.

It also creates the following nonmalicious PDF file then opens it to avoid suspicion:

  • %User Temp%\{random file name}.pdf

  SOLUTION

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TROJ_PIDIEF.ZTY. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
