This Trojan takes advantage of certain software vulnerabilities to drop malicious files. Upon successfully exploiting the vulnerability, it drops a malicious file detected as TROJ_MALEX.AV.

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan drops the following non-malicious files:

  • %User Temp%\ap summit flyer.pdf

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

Dropping Routine

This Trojan takes advantage of the following software vulnerabilities to drop malicious files:

  • CVE-2008-2992

    Upon successfully exploiting the said vulnerability, this malware drops the following malicious file:

    • %User Temp%\{random number}.tmp - detected as TROJ_MALEX.AV

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Remove malware files dropped/downloaded by TROJ_PIDIEF.TEL

    TROJ_MALEX.AV

Search and delete these files
