Two years on from HSE Ireland breach, firms are still in reactive security mode
Around two years ago, the Irish health executive (HSE) suffered one of the worst ransomware breaches ever recorded in the country. Preventable mistakes led to an incident which compromised data on over 100,000 people and cost the organisation tens of millions of pounds.
Around two years ago, the Irish health executive (HSE) suffered one of the worst ransomware breaches ever recorded in the country. Preventable mistakes led to an incident which compromised data on over 100,000 people and cost the organisation tens of millions of pounds.
Frustratingly, many organisations are still not addressing their security matters, and we find that rather than taking proactive steps to gain visibility into their attack surface they are waiting to be breached before coming to us to support them. Our webinar in May will provide some invaluable intelligence to help them get started.
A cautionary tale
Global organisations are spending billions each year on cybersecurity. Yet serious breaches like the one at HSE are still happening on a regular basis. That’s because funds are diverted to the wrong areas. Often purchases are made in knee-jerk fashion after an incident. The resulting siloed point products leave coverage gaps, add management overheads for stretched security teams and run up excessive license costs.
One organisation that got their security strategy right is University College Cork (UCC). Despite being a satisfied customer of Trend Micro’s Cloud App Security (CAS) suite, it viewed the HSE breach as a cautionary tale. Concerned about their own risk exposure, senior IT leaders at the university asked Trend Micro to run a health check on its network and servers. It highlighted multiple issues which UCC proactively addressed by investing in Trend Managed XDR (MDR) and Deep Discovery Inspector.
May the fourth be with you
Trend Micro is teaming up with our, leading partner Softcat to take this message out, in a new webinar for our Irish customers. On May 4, participants will get to learn all about the tactics and techniques and procedures (TTPs) threat actors are using today to breach their targets. We’ll not only share these Red Team tips, but also some best practices on defending against advanced cyber-attacks. During this session we will also hear from UCC and another customer that was recently breached and they will talk about their own experiences.
We hope it will spur more organisations to request their own health check and start shoring up their defences before the next incident happens, rather than after it’s too late.
