Based on analysis of the codes, it has the following capabilities:
- Checks for the file STARTUP.XLS in the XLSTART folder first
- Saves the active workbook as STARTUP.XLS in the said folder if the file name does not already exist in the XLSTART folder
- Infects Microsoft Office Excel worksheet files by creating a macro module named StartUp, which contains the virus code
- Infects systems running on Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003 where Microsoft Office Excel is installed

Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.
Step 2
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as X97M_LAROUX.EBM. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
