This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This Trojan drops the following component file(s):
- %ProgramData%\{random folder name}\02000000 - contains path of malware copy
- %ProgramData%\{random folder name}\00000000 - contains a character
(Note: %ProgramData% is a version of the Program Files folder where any user on a multi-user computer can make changes to programs. This is usually C:\ProgramData in Windows Vista and 7, or C:\Program Files on Windows 2000, XP (32-bit), and Server 2003, or C:\Program Files (x86) on Windows XP (64-bit).)
It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %Windows%\{random filename}.exe
- %ProgramData%\{random folder name}\01000000
(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows.. %ProgramData% is a version of the Program Files folder where any user on a multi-user computer can make changes to programs. This is usually C:\ProgramData in Windows Vista and 7, or C:\Program Files on Windows 2000, XP (32-bit), and Server 2003, or C:\Program Files (x86) on Windows XP (64-bit).)
It adds the following processes:
- explorer.exe
It injects codes into the following process(es):
- explorer.exe

After successfully encrypting user's files, it drops the ransom note DECRYPT_INSTRUCTIONS.html.
It deletes shadow copies by executing the following command:

Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product and note files detected as TROJ_CRILOCK.YNE
Step 3
Restart in Safe Mode
Step 4
Delete this registry value
