This spyware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This spyware drops the following files:

  • %Application Data%\{random1}\{random}.exe
  • %Application Data%\{random2}\{random}.{random}

(Note: %Application Data% is the current user's Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Profiles\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\Profiles\{user name}\Application Data on Windows NT, and C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %Application Data%\{random1}
  • %Application Data%\{random2}

NOTES:

The downloaded configuration file contains information where this spyware can download an updated copy of itself, a list of targeted bank-related websites from which it steals information, and the URL where it sends its stolen data.

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product and note files detected as TSPY_ZBOT.COZ

Restart in Safe Mode

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as TSPY_ZBOT.COZ. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. NOTES:

The created registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\{random} cannot be identified since there are no reference values in the created key. The only way it can be identified is by comparing the present keys with a backup of the system's registry. Note that the key {random} need not to be deleted since it will not cause any system harm.

  3. Ensure that programs and users of the computer use the lowest level of privileges necessary to complete a task. This is important especially for shared computers that are connected to a network.

  5. Enforce a strong password policy. Typically, a strong password consists of a mix of numbers, letters, and characters.

  8. Be aware of social engineering attacks.
  9. Use safe coding practices to avoid exploit of websites and applications.

  11. Monitor network connections for any suspicious connection or connectivity.
  12. Regularly update list of sites that are trusted.
  13. Turn off file sharing if not needed. If needed, disable anonymous access to shared folders.
