Arrival Details

This worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %Application Data%\Java\{unreadable character}shimgvw{unreadable character}.exe
  • %Application Data%\Java\{unreadable character}Jview.exe

(Note: %Application Data% is the Application Data folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.)

It drops the following files:

  • %Application Data%\Java\Desktop.ini
  • %System%\inf\svchost.exe - detected as TROJ_COMREROP.AG

(Note: %Application Data% is the Application Data folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.. %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %Application Data%\Java
  • %System%\inf

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
{user name}{unreadable character} = "%Application Data%\Java\{unreadable character}shimgvw{unreadable character}.exe"

Propagation

This worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:

  • {drive}:\RÈCYCLER

It drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:

  • {drive}:\RÈCYCLER\thumbs.db

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

The said .INF file contains the following strings:

;{garbage codes}
[Autorun] ;{garbage codes}
;{garbage codes}
UseAutoPlay = 1 ;{garbage codes}
;{garbage codes}
Action=Open folder to view files ;{garbage codes}
;{garbage codes}
Open=RÈCYCLER\thumbs.db ;{garbage codes}
;{garbage codes}
Shell\Open\Command=RÈCYCLER\thumbs.db ;{garbage codes}
;{garbage codes}
Shell\Open\Default=1 ;{garbage codes}
;{garbage codes}
Shell\Explore\Command=RÈCYCLER\thumbs.db ;{garbage codes}
;{garbage codes}

NOTES:

Upon execution, this worm executes the specific command Rundll32.exe shimgvw.dll, ImageView_FullScreen to hide its malicious routines from the user.

It creates the subfolder RECYLER in the folder %User Temp%\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning, which is the Microsoft CD Burning folder. It then drops a copy of itself in the said folder as thumbs.db. It also drops an AUTORUN.INF file in the aforementioned folder. If a user uses the Microsoft CD burning feature to burn files to a CD, the added files, including a copy of itself are also burned to the CD.

This worm searches for files with the following extensions in removable drives:

  • .bmp
  • .gif
  • .jpg
  • .jpeg
  • .png
  • .wmf

It then drops a copy of itself using the file name found in the removable drives. It then hides the original file tricking users to click the malware copy.

It shuts down the infected computer once any of the following processes/windows are running/active:

  • Norman Malware Cleaner
  • OLLYDBG
  • PEiD v0.94
  • PEiD v0.95
  • PEiD.exe
  • procexp.exe
  • PROCEXPL

It creates registry entries to prevent execution of certain file types.
