TECHNICAL DETAILS
Arrival Details
This worm arrives by connecting affected removable drives to a system.
It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %Windows%\service.exe
(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.)
It terminates the execution of the copy it initially executed and executes the copy it drops instead.
Autostart Technique
This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Windows Services = "service.exe"
Propagation
This worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:
- RECYCLER
- RECYCLER\S-1-6-21-2434476501-1644491937-600003330-1213
It drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:
- RECYCLER\S-1-6-21-2434476501-1644491937-600003330-1213\autorunme.exe
It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
The said .INF file contains the following strings:
[autorun]
open=RECYCLER\S-1-6-21-2434476501-1644491937-600003330-1213\autorunme.exe
icon=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,4
action=Open folder to view files
shell\open=Open
shell\open\command=RECYCLER\S-1-6-21-2434476501-1644491937-600003330-1213\autorunme.exe
shell\open\default=1
