OVERVIEW
This worm drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
It executes the downloaded files. As a result, malicious routines of the downloaded files are exhibited on the affected system.

Installation
This worm adds the following folders:
- %system root%\RECYCLER %system root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-5423880567-1859940501-728432823-4609
It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %system root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-5423880567-1859940501-728432823-4609\hdav.exe
It drops the following files:
- %system root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-5423880567-1859940501-728432823-4609\Desktop.ini
Autostart Technique
This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Taskman = %system root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-5423880567-1859940501-728432823-4609\hdav.exe
Propagation
This worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:
- DRIVE
It drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:
- DRIVE\file.exe
It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
The said .INF file contains the following strings:

Download Routine
This worm accesses the following websites to download files:
- http://www.{BLOCKED}ebtown.com/giknow/zone.exe - detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_BURNIX.SMEP
It then executes the downloaded files. As a result, malicious routines of the downloaded files are exhibited on the affected system.
Other Details
Based on analysis of the codes, it has the following capabilities:
- It drops the file DRIVE\Desktop.ini in all removable drives.
SOLUTION
Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Remove the malware/grayware file dropped/downloaded by WORM_RIMECUD.SMI
- TROJ_BURNIX.SMEP
Step 3
Search and delete these folders
DRIVE
Step 4
Delete this registry value

Search and delete AUTORUN.INF files created by WORM_RIMECUD.SMI that contain these strings

Step 6
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as WORM_RIMECUD.SMI. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
