OVERVIEW
This worm drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
Installation
This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %Windows%\MSGM.DLL
(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.)
File Infection
This worm infects the following file types:
- .EXE - infected files are detected as PE_PATCHED.III
Propagation
This worm drops the following copy of itself in all physical and removable drives:
- {Drive}:\Pagef1le.sys
It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
The said .INF file contains the following strings:

OPEN=rundll32.exe Pagefi1e.sys,RunDll
shell\\´ò¿ª(&0)\\command=rundll32.exe Pagefi1e.sys,RunDll
shell=´ò¿ª(&0)
SOLUTION
Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.
Step 2
Remove malware files dropped/downloaded by WORM_PATCH.A
Step 3
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product and note files detected as WORM_PATCH.A
Step 4
Restart in Safe Mode
Step 5
Search and delete AUTORUN.INF files created by WORM_PATCH.A that contain these strings
Step 6
Search and delete the file detected as WORM_PATCH.A
Step 7
Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as WORM_PATCH.A. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
