This worm arrives via removable drives. It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

However, as of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.

It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-7629753459-7106440264-962010285-2599\nissan.exe

(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-7629753459-7106440264-962010285-2599\

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

Taskman = "%System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-7629753459-7106440264-962010285-2599\nissan.exe"

  SOLUTION

Minimum Scan Engine: 9.200

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Step 2

Identify and delete files detected as WORM_PALEVO.CLM using either the Startup Disk or Recovery Console
