Arrival Details

This worm may be downloaded by other malware/grayware/spyware from remote sites.

It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %Windows%\ggdrive32.exe

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.)

It creates the following folders:

  • {removable drive}\RECYCLER

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\
Explorer\Run
Microsoft Driver Setup = "%Windows%\ggdrive32.exe"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Microsoft Driver Setup = "%Windows%\ggdrive32.exe"

Other System Modifications

This worm creates the following registry entry(ies) to bypass Windows Firewall:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\
FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\
List
{Malware Path and File Name} = "{Malware Path and File Name}:*:%Windows%\ggdrive32.exe"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\
FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile
EnableFirewall = "0"

Propagation

This worm drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:

  • RECYCLER\R-1-5-21-1482476501-1644491937-682003330-1013\acleaner.exe

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

The said .INF file contains the following strings:

{garbage}
[autorun]
open=RECYCLER\R-1-5-21-1482476501-1644491937-682003330-1013\acleaner.exe
{garbage}icon=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,4
action=Open folder to view files
shell\open=Open
shell\open\command=RECYCLER\R-1-5-21-1482476501-1644491937-682003330-1013\acleaner.exe
{garbage}
shell\open\default=1
{garbage}

It sends copies of itself to target recipients using the following instant-messaging (IM) applications:

  • MSN

Download Routine

This worm accesses the following websites to download files:

  • http://{BLOCKED}g.net/xxudv.exe - detected as TROJ_KOLAB.FH
  • http://{BLOCKED}natraoi.com/serv8.exe - detected as TROJ_FAKEAV.SM8
  • http://{BLOCKED}natraoi.com/dq.exe - detected as TROJ_FAKEAV.SM8

It downloads an updated copy of itself from the following website(s):

  • http://{BLOCKED}natraoi.com/ms.exe - also detected as WORM_KOLAB.FH

It then executes the downloaded files. As a result, malicious routines of the downloaded files are exhibited on the affected system.
