  OVERVIEW

This worm arrives via removable drives. It arrives by accessing affected shared networks.

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

  TECHNICAL DETAILS

File Size: 259,072 bytes
File Type: EXE
Memory Resident: Yes
Initial Samples Received Date: 07 Dec 2011

Arrival Details

This worm arrives via removable drives.

It arrives by accessing affected shared networks.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %System%\wmpkb32.exe

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)

It terminates the execution of the copy it initially executed and executes the copy it drops instead.

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Windows Recovery Service = "%System%\wmpkb32.exe"

Other System Modifications

This worm adds the following registry entries:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\
Layers
%System%\wmpkb32.exe = "DisableNXShowUI"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\
Layers
%System%\wmpkb32.exe = "DisableNXShowUI"

It creates the following registry entry(ies) to bypass Windows Firewall:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\
FirewallPolicy\DomainProfile\AuthorizedApplications\
List
%System%\wmpkb32.exe = "%System%\wmpkb32.exe:*:Enabled:Windows Recovery Service"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\
FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\
List
%System%\wmpkb32.exe = "%System%\wmpkb32.exe:*:Enabled:Windows Recovery Service"

Propagation

This worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:

  • {removable drive letter}:\SysCore.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

It drops copies of itself in network drives such as the following:

  • {network drive letter}:\SysCore.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\syscore-c469285.dat
  • {network drive letter}:\~drivemgr.exe

It drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:

  • {removable drive letter}:\SysCore.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\syscore-c469285.dat
  • {removable drive letter}:\~drivemgr.exe

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

The said .INF file contains the following strings:

;{garbage characters}
open=CMD /C START SysCore.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\syscore-c469285.dat

This worm connects to the following possibly malicious URL:

  • s16.{BLOCKED}ore.su:5781
  • s24.{BLOCKED}ore.su:4502
  • s66.{BLOCKED}rog.su:5781

  • {network drive letter}:\adt{random number}.lnk
  • {network drive letter}:\j.cpl
  • {removable drive letter}:\adt{random number}.lnk
  • {removable drive letter}:\j.cpl

It creates the following folder in all network drives:

  • {network drive letter}:\SysCore.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
