OVERVIEW
This worm arrives via removable drives. It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

This worm arrives via removable drives.
It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\spoo1sv.exe
(Note: %Program Files% is the default Program Files folder, usually C:\Program Files.)
It adds the following processes:
- calc.exe
- iexplore.exe
Autostart Technique
This worm registers itself as a system service to ensure its automatic execution at every system startup by adding the following registry entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\spoo1sv info
ImagePath = "%Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO\spoo1sv.exe"
Propagation
This worm drops the following copy of itself in all physical and removable drives:
- spoo1sv.exe
It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
The said .INF file contains the following strings:

open=spoo1sv.exe
shellexecute=spoo1sv.exe
shell\Auto\command=spoo1sv.exe
Other Details
This worm connects to the following possibly malicious URL:
- http://www.{BLOCKED}23.org/ip.txt
- {BLOCKED}ad.wrs.com
SOLUTION
Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Restart in Safe Mode

Delete this registry key

Step 4
Search and delete AUTORUN.INF files created by WORM_HUPIGON.TRY that contain these strings

Step 5
Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as WORM_HUPIGON.TRY. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
