OVERVIEW
This worm drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
It opens a hidden Internet Explorer window.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
Installation
This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msbackup.exe
(Note: %Program Files% is the default Program Files folder, usually C:\Program Files.)
It drops the following non-malicious file:
- %System%\drivers\oreans32.sys
- %Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\2010.txt
(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.. %Program Files% is the default Program Files folder, usually C:\Program Files.)
Autostart Technique
This worm registers itself as a system service to ensure its automatic execution at every system startup by adding the following registry entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Backup_Info
ImagePath = %Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msbackup.exe
It drops the following file(s) in the Windows User Startup folder to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:
- msbackup.vbs
Other System Modifications
This worm modifies the following registry entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\BITS
StateIndex = 0
(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is 1.)
Propagation
This worm drops the following copy of itself in all physical and removable drives:
- msbackup.exe
It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.
The said .INF file contains the following strings:

Backdoor Routine
This worm opens a hidden Internet Explorer window.
SOLUTION
Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Delete this registry key

Search and delete this file
- %System%\drivers\oreans32.sys

Step 6
Search and delete AUTORUN.INF files created by WORM_HUPIGON.AHW that contain these strings

Step 7
Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as WORM_HUPIGON.AHW. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
