TECHNICAL DETAILS
Arrival Details
This Worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This Worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:
- %All Users Profile%\inetinfo.exe
(Note: %All Users Profile% is the common user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\ProgramData on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit). )
It drops the following files:
- %User Temp%\conm.dll
- {removable drive}\AuToRUn.iNf
- {removable drive}\RECYCLER\{encrypted computer name}.ldf
- %All Users Profile%\DRM\Media\{encrypted computer name}.ldf {if DRM folder is found}
- %All Users Profile%\Documents\Media\{encrypted computer name}.ldf {if DRM folder is not found}
(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).. %All Users Profile% is the common user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\ProgramData on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit). )
It drops and executes the following files:
- %User Temp%\se.bat - deleted after execution
- %User Temp%\oi.bat {disable most security features} - deleted after execution
(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)
It adds the following processes:
- "%Program Files%\winrar\rar.exe" a -apX -r -ed-tk -m5 -dh -tl-hpThis0nePiece-taYYYYMMDD {shortened %All Users Profile%\DRM\Media\{encrypted computer name}.ldf} X:\*.doc X:\*.DOCX
- where X (apX included) = drives with drivetypes: DRIVE_FIXED or DRIVE_REMOTE
- YYYYMMDD, where MM = Month-1 && DD = Day-1
- if "%All Users Profile%\DRM" is not found, replace with "%All Users Profile%\Documents" instead
(Note: %All Users Profile% is the common user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\ProgramData on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit). )
It creates the following folders with attributes set to System and Hidden to prevent users from discovering and removing its components:
- %All Users Profile%\DRM\Media {if DRM folder is found}
- %All Users Profile%\Documents\Media {if DRM folder is not found}
(Note: %All Users Profile% is the common user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\ProgramData on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit). )

SOLUTION
Step 1
Trend Micro Predictive Machine Learning detects and blocks malware at the first sign of its existence, before it executes on your system. When enabled, your Trend Micro product detects this malware under the following machine learning name:
-
Troj.Win32.TRX.XXPE50FFF033
Step 2
Before doing any scans, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 3
Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.
Step 4
Restart in Safe Mode
Step 5
Search and delete this file
- %All Users Profile%\Documents\Media\{encrypted computer name}.ldf
- %All Users Profile%\DRM\Media\{encrypted computer name}.ldf
- %All Users Profile%\inetinfo.exe
- %User Temp%\BRHFLQ.XML
- %User Temp%\conm.dll
- %User Temp%\kis.exe
- %User Temp%\kisi.exe
- %User Temp%\oi.bat
- %User Temp%\se.bat
- {removable drive}\AuToRUn.iNf
- {removable drive}\RECYCLER\{encrypted computer name}.ldf
- {removable drive}\RECYCLER\wmimgmt.com
Step 6
Search and delete this folder
- {removable drive}\RECYCLER
Step 7
Restore this modified registry value
Important: Editing the Windows Registry incorrectly can lead to irreversible system malfunction. Please do this step only if you know how or you can ask assistance from your system administrator. Else, check this Microsoft article first before modifying your computer's registry.
- In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{7849596a-48ea-486e-8937-a2a3009f31a9}\InProcServer32
- (Default) = "%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll"
- (Default) = "%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll"
- In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile
- EnableFirewall = 1
- EnableFirewall = 1
- In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
- forceguest = 0 {for admin accounts}; 1 {for guest accounts}.)
- forceguest = 0 {for admin accounts}; 1 {for guest accounts}.)
- In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
- limitblankpassworduse = 0 {if account has password}; 1 {if account has no password}
- limitblankpassworduse = 0 {if account has password}; 1 {if account has no password}
Step 8
Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as Worm.Win32.HILGILD.B. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
