This Trojan arrives as an attachment to email messages spammed by other malware/grayware or malicious users.
Dropping Routine
This Trojan drops the following files:
- %Temp%\adobeacd-update.bat - used to execute VBS_POWRUN.KG
- %Temp%\adobeacd-update.vbs - detected as VBS_POWRUN.KG. This is used to raise privilege and execute TROJ_POWDLOD.GN
- %Temp%\adobeacd-update.ps1 - detected as TROJ_POWDLOD.GN
(Note: %Temp% is the Windows temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\Temp on all Windows operating system versions.)
It executes the dropped file(s). As a result, malicious routines of the dropped files are exhibited on the affected system.
SOLUTION
Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Remove the malware/grayware file dropped/downloaded by W97M_DLOADER.AI. (Note: Please skip this step if the threat(s) listed below have already been removed.)
- VBS_POWRUN.KG
- TROJ_POWDLOD.GN
Step 3
Search and delete these files
- %Temp%\adobeacd-update.bat
Step 4
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as W97M_DLOADER.AI. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
