This malware is involved in the Backoff PoS malware attack discovered in August 2014. It has the ability to steal financial information from infected devices. Users who may be affected by this malware may find their financial accounts suddenly being drained of cash.

This spyware drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

(Note: %Application Data% is the Application Data folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %Application Data%\OracleJava

This spyware executes the following commands from a remote malicious user:

This spyware gathers the following data:

  • Malware version name (e.g. goo)
  • Malware built version

It logs a user's keystrokes to steal information.

This spyware saves the stolen information in the following file:

  • %Application Data%\OracleJava\Log.txt - contains logged active window, installations, keystrokes and mouse activities with corresponding date and time

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
