  TECHNICAL DETAILS

Arrival Details

It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Autostart Technique

It adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
ctfmon={malware path and file name}

Information Theft

It attempts to steal information from the following banks and/or other financial institutions:

  • Banco Itau

  • Banco Real

  • Banco Santander

  • Bradesco

  • Caixa

It monitors the Internet Explorer (IE) activities of the affected system, specifically the address bar or title bar. It recreates a legitimate Web site with a spoofed login page if a user visits banking sites with the following strings in the address bar or title bar:

  • BANCO REAL - Windows Internet Explorer

  • Banco Ita

  • INTERNETBANKINGCAIXAWIN

  • bradesco.com.br

  • itau.com.br

  • santander.com.br

The spoofed login overlaps the legitimate login area of the Web site, thus tricking the user into thinking that it is part of the IE window. The spoofed login page is located in a fixed area of the legitimate Web site. The said routine tricks the user into giving out sensitive account-related information. It then logs keystrokes entered by the user in the user name and password fields of the spoofed login page.

It attempts to steal sensitive online banking information, such as user names and passwords. This routine risks the exposure of the user's account information, which may then lead to the unauthorized use of the stolen data.

Stolen Information

It sends the gathered information via HTTP POST to the following URL:

Variant Information

It has the following MD5 hashes:

  • 8119d44a3bd4b81eb3918cadd1d877c9

It has the following SHA1 hashes:

  • 4e305c1b670d879a9c237cdbef5680ea7c31e43a
