HOSTS File Modification
This Trojan adds the following strings to the Windows HOSTS file:
- 127.0.0.1 genuine.microsoft.com
- 127.0.0.1 mpa.one.microsoft.com
- 127.0.0.1 sls.microsoft.com
SOLUTION
Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Remove these strings added by the malware/grayware/spyware in the HOSTS file
- 127.0.0.1 genuine.microsoft.com
- 127.0.0.1 mpa.one.microsoft.com
- 127.0.0.1 sls.microsoft.com
Step 3
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to clean files detected as TROJ_QHOST.HZL. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
