This exploit may be downloaded unknowingly by a user when visiting malicious Web sites. It then executes the dropped file(s). As a result, malicious routines of the dropped files are exhibited on the affected system. It takes advantage of the Adobe Reader and Acrobat 'newplayer()' JavaScript Method Remote Code Execution Vulnerability, which is a Use-after-free vulnerability in Doc.media.newPlayer method in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 8.0 to 9.2, and possibly earlier versions.
It then drops files detected as TROJ_DLOAD.COB and TROJ_SMALL.MLC.
This Trojan may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

Dropping Routine
This Trojan drops the following files:
- %User Temp%\36.tmp – detected as TROJ_DLOAD.COB
- %User Temp%\age.exe – detected as TROJ_SMALL.MLC
It takes advantage of the following software vulnerabilities to drop malicious files:
- Adobe Reader and Acrobat 'newplayer()' JavaScript Method Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
SOLUTION
Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.
Step 2
Remove malware files dropped/downloaded by TROJ_PIDIEF.SHK
- TROJ_DLOAD.COB
- TROJ_SMALL.MLC
Step 3
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TROJ_PIDIEF.SHK. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. Step 4
This step disables JavaScript rendering in Adobe Acrobat/Reader.
- In your Adobe Acrobat/Reader window, Click Edit then choose Preferences.
- In the left panel, click JavaScript.
- In the right panel, uncheck the Enable Acrobat JavaScript option.
- Click OK.
