This Trojan arrives as an attachment to email messages spammed by other malware/grayware or malicious users.

It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

Download Routine

This Trojan takes advantage of the following software vulnerabilities to download possibly malicious files:

  • Doc.media.newPlayer Vulnerability – (CVE-2009-4324)
  • util.printf() – (CVE-2008-2992)
  • Collab.collectEmailInfo() – (CVE-2008-0655)
  • Collab.getIcon() – (CVE-2009-0927)

After successfully exploiting the said vulnerability, this malware connects to the following URLs to possibly download other malicious files:

  • http://justresins.com/tg/f5fa5d27babf7c7f5b46fb711e2745e5.php?showtopic={number}&showuser={number}&showforum=us&&reader_version={version}

It saves the files it downloads using the following names:

  • %User Temp%\e.exe

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Step 2

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TROJ_PIDIEF.KKA. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
