TECHNICAL DETAILS
Arrival Details
This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This Trojan drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %User Temp%\tmp{random characters}.tmp
(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)
It stays memory-resident by injecting codes into the following processes:
- svchost.exe
Other Details
This Trojan connects to the following possibly malicious URL:
However, as of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.
NOTES:
This Trojan attempts to reconfigure different routers. It does this by sending requests to the local Web page for various setup wizards bundled with the said routers. Some of the requests are the following:
- /index.asp
- /dlink/hwiz.html
- /home.asp
- /wizard.htm
It then attempts to identify the password needed to administer the router by using any of the following list of user name-password combinations (i.e. {user name}:{password} :

Once it successfully performs this routine, it changes the system's domain name system (DNS) records. This enables remote malicious users to have access to system processes as all transactions pass through their networks first.
It modifies DNS settings using HTTP POST or GET depending on the router. Some of the requests are the following:

SOLUTION
Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.
Step 2
Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as TROJ_PAKES.SLS. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. Please check this Knowledge Base page for more information.
