This Ransomware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Autostart Technique
This Ransomware adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
CurrentVersion\Run
Wood Man Ransomware = {malware path}
Process Termination
This Ransomware terminates the following processes if found running in the affected system's memory:
- taskmgr.exe
- cmd.exe
- regedit.exe
NOTES:
This ransomware does not encrypt any files in the computer, instead an audio will be played and the following lockscreen will be displayed:
The correct password is: mm2wood.mid
If the correct password is typed in, it will remove its auto-start registry entry and terminate itself.
If the wrong password is typed in, it will show the following messages:
It will, then, shut down the computer.
SOLUTION
Step 1
Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.
Step 2
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Delete this registry value
