This Ransomware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Ransomware drops the following files:

  • %AppDataLocal%\TempTqykUo3.png

(Note: %AppDataLocal% is the Local Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local on Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %User Startup%\svchost.exe

(Note: %User Startup% is the current user's Startup folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Profiles\{user name}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\Profiles\{user name}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup on Windows NT, C:\Documents and Settings\{User name}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup on Windows XP, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup on Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

This Ransomware does the following:

  • Encrypts the following drive letters:
    • Drive Letters A to Y
  • Downloads a file from the following URL links:

  • Disables the following Key Strokes:
    • Ctrl +Esc
    • Alt + Tab
    • Alt + Esc
  • It displays the Ransom Note asking the victim to subscribe by following the link : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-lHJZR3Gqxm24_Vd_AJ5Yw?sub_confirmation=1

Ransomware Routine

This Ransomware encrypts files found in the following folders:

  • %User Profile%\Desktop
  • %User Profile%\MyMusic
  • %User Profile%\Personal
  • %User Profile%\MyVideos
  • %User Profile%\Contacts
  • %User Profile%\Downloads
  • %User Profile%\OneDrive

(Note: %User Profile% is the current user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name} on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name} on Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It appends the following extension to the file name of the encrypted files:

  • {File Name}.PewDiePie

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as Ransom.MSIL.PEWDIEPIE.THABAHAH. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
