This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It executes commands from a remote malicious user, effectively compromising the affected system.

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan drops the following files:

  • %AppDataLocal%\otrukos.dll -- detected as BKDR_SYMMI.ABC

(Note: %AppDataLocal% is the Local Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local on Windows Vista and 7.)

It adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:

  • "HBCN-O3CET-JKHAN"

Autostart Technique

This Trojan creates the following registry entries to enable automatic execution of dropped component at every system startup:

Backdoor Routine

This Trojan executes the following commands from a remote malicious user:

  • Download and execute arbitrary files
  • Upload files
  • Modifies system settings

It connects to the following URL(s) to send and receive commands from a remote malicious user:

  • {BLOCKED}1.{BLOCKED}pizzaeater.me.uk
  • {BLOCKED}a.{BLOCKED}pizzaeater.me.uk
  • {BLOCKED}3.{BLOCKED}pizzaeater.me.uk

Identify and delete files detected as BKDR_SYMMI.ABC using either the Startup Disk or Recovery Console
