This backdoor may be dropped by other malware.
It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.
Installation
This backdoor drops the following files:
- %Windows%\tabtips.exe - also detected as BKDR_POISON.BAT
- %Windows%\tabtips - contains the stolen information
(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.)
It injects codes into the following process(es):
- EXPLORER.EXE
- IEXPLORE.EXE
Autostart Technique
This backdoor adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
WindowsProcess = %Windows%\svchost.exe
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\

Dropping Routine
This backdoor drops the following files wherein it saves the information it gathers:
- %Windows%\tabtips
(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.)
Information Theft
This backdoor logs a user's keystrokes to steal information.
Other Details
This backdoor opens a hidden Internet Explorer window.
It does the following:
- It opens a hidden internet explorer to connect to the following website to send and receive information:
- {BLOCKED}nes.no-ip.org
SOLUTION
Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.
