It executes commands from a remote malicious user, effectively compromising the affected system.

This backdoor arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Backdoor Routine
This backdoor executes the following commands from a remote malicious user:
- download and execute a third party remote desktop protocol software to gain remote access
- download arbitrary files
- elevate access
- terminate self
- find arbitrary files
- create proxy
- retrieve stolen local user passwords to C&C
- reboot OS
- run arbitrary files
- load and execute arbitrary files
- create and send screenshot capture
- set arbitrary site as C&C
- sleep
- create tunnel to arbitrary network address
- download updated copy
NOTES:
This detection is for the server component of the backdoor detected as BKDR_CARBANAK. It is used by cybercriminals/attackers to send malicious commands.
SOLUTION
Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as BKDR_CARBANAK.D. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
