Arrival Details

This worm arrives via removable drives.

It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %Program Files%\MuAS_Virus.exe

(Note: %Program Files% is the default Program Files folder, usually C:\Program Files in Windows 2000, Server 2003, and XP (32-bit), Vista (32-bit), and 7 (32-bit), or C:\Program Files (x86) in Windows XP (64-bit), Vista (64-bit), and 7 (64-bit).)

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
MuAS_Virus = "%Program Files%\MuAS_Virus.exe"

Propagation

This worm drops copies of itself in all removable and physical drives found in the system.

Other Details

This worm drops the following file(s)/component(s):

  • %Windows%\host
  • {removable drive letter}:\host

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows.)

NOTES:

The dropped file in %Windows%\hostand {removable drive letter}:\host contains the following strings:

  • -11{date and time of malware propagation}'KasihaN'

This worm uses the legit icon of Microsoft Office to trick users into thinking that it is a legitimate file.

It drops copies of itself in all drives connected to the system. The number of copies is dependent on the number of .DOC files found on the system. It also uses the filename of the .DOC files found in the system. It sets the attributes of the original .DOC files found into as System and Hidden. It does this so that the user sees the copy of malware using the filename, and consequently, tricks into clicking it, thus running the malware.
