It sends messages that contain links to sites hosting remote copies of itself using the instant messaging (IM) applications Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, Live Messenger, PalTalk, Skype and XFire.

It also drops a copy of itself in the folder created in removable drives using the file names of folders found in the drives. It also creates a .LNK file using the file names of folders found in the removable drives, which is a shortcut file that redirects to its dropped copy.

This worm arrives via removable drives. It may be dropped by other malware. It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

It modifies registry entries to disable the Windows Firewall settings. This action allows this malware to perform its routines without being deteted by the Windows Firewall.

It drops copies of itself into all the removable drives connected to an affected system.

It connects to a website to send and receive information.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %Application Data%\HEX-5823-6893-6818\jutched.exe

(Note: %Application Data% is the current user's Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Profiles\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\Profiles\{user name}\Application Data on Windows NT, and C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

Propagation

This worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:

This worm does the following:

  • Drops a copy of itself in the created folder in removable drives using the file names of folders found in the drives. It also creates a .LNK file using the file names of folders found in the removable drives, which is a shortcut file that redirects to its dropped copy.

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Identify and terminate files detected as WORM_GENOME.DD
