This Trojan arrives as an attachment to email messages spammed by other malware/grayware or malicious users.

Autostart Technique

This Trojan adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
My App = "%User Profile%\NTUSER.dat{random GUID}.exe"

Dropping Routine

This Trojan drops the following files:

  • %User Profile%\NTUSER.dat{random GUID}.exe - BKDR_SWRORT.CP
  • %User Profile%\tmp.bat

(Note: %User Profile% is the current user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name} on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name} on Windows Vista and 7.)

It executes the dropped file(s). As a result, malicious routines of the dropped files are exhibited on the affected system.

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Remove the malware/grayware file dropped/downloaded by X2KM_MDROP.A. (Note: Please skip this step if the threat(s) listed below have already been removed.)

Step 3

Delete this registry value
