This malware is loaded by HTML_EXPDROP.II. It attempts to connect to a site to download an archive file containing other files.

The downloaded files are executed, loading other files detected as TROJ_PLUGX.SME and TROJ_PLUGX.ME. As a result, malicious routines of the executed files are exhibited on the affected system.

This Trojan may be hosted on a website and run when a user accesses the said website.

This Trojan may be hosted on a website and run when a user accesses the said website.

NOTES:

Once this malware is loaded by exploit.html, detected as HTML_EXPDROP.II, it exploits the following vulnerability to download other malware:

  • CVE-2010-2884

It attempts to connect to the following site to download a malicious file:

  • http://www.{BLOCKED}e.com/test.exe

The downloaded file is a self-extracting archive containing the following 3 files:

  • Nv.exe - a non-malicious legitimate file
  • Nv.mp3 - detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_PLUGX.SME
  • NvSmartMax.dll - detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_PLUGX.ME

It executes the file Nv.exe, which in turn loads NvSmartMax.dll. As a result, malicious behavior of the downloaded file is exhibited on the affected system.

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Close all opened browser windows

Step 3

Remove malware files dropped/downloaded by SWF_DROPPR.IJ

Step 4

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as SWF_DROPPR.IJ. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
