This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This Trojan drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
- %System Root%\RECYCLER\wpnedit.exe
(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)
It creates the following folders:
- %System Root%\RECYCLER
(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)
It stays memory-resident by creating remote threads:
- explorer.exe
Autostart Technique
This Trojan adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

Dropping Routine
This Trojan drops the following files:
- %System Root%\RECYCLER\Desktop.ini
(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)
NOTES:
This Trojan sets the file attributes of the dropped copy %System Root%\RECYCLER\wpnedit.exe to Read only, Hidden, and System.
It attempts to establish a connection to the following remote server:
- {BLOCKED}5.{BLOCKED}e.ru
The remote server may send data containing IP addresses to TROJ_LETHIC.EW. Then, TROJ_LETHIC.EW may send traffic to these IP addresses. However, as of this writing, the said site is inaccessible.

Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Identify and delete files detected as TROJ_LETHIC.EW using either the Startup Disk or Recovery Console
Step 3
Delete this registry value

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TROJ_LETHIC.EW. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
