  OVERVIEW

Infection Channel:

Propagates via removable drives, Downloaded from the Internet

This worm arrives by connecting affected removable drives to a system. It may be downloaded by other malware/grayware from remote sites.

It is injected into all running processes to remain memory resident.

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

It executes commands from a remote malicious user, effectively compromising the affected system. It connects to a website to send and receive information.

It deletes the initially executed copy of itself.

Arrival Details

This worm arrives by connecting affected removable drives to a system.

It may be downloaded by the following malware/grayware from remote sites:

  • SWF_BLACOLE.PS

It may be downloaded from the following remote sites:

  • http://{BLOCKED}b.net/w.php?f=cf1bd&e=0
  • http://{BLOCKED}b.net/w.php?f=cf1bd&e=4

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %Application Data%\KB{random numbers}.exe

(Note: %Application Data% is the current user's Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Profiles\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\Profiles\{user name}\Application Data on Windows NT, and C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %Application Data%\{random folder}

It is injected into all running processes to remain memory resident.

It adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:

  • Local\M{random numbers}
  • Local\I{random numbers}

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
KB{random numbers}.exe = ""%Application Data%\KB{random numbers}.exe""

Other System Modifications

This worm adds the following registry entries as part of its installation routine:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
GlobalUserOffline = 0

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows Media Center\{random1}
{default} = {hex numbers}

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows Media Center

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows Media Center\{random}

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows Media Center\{random1}

Propagation

This worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:

  • {random folder}

It drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:

  • {random folder}\{random file name}.exe

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

The said .INF file contains the following strings:

[autorun]
open={random folder}\{random file name}.exe
shell\Open\Command={random folder}\{random file name}.exe
shell\Open\Default=1
shell\Explore\Command={random folder}\{random file name}.exe
shell\Autoplay\command={random folder}\{random file name}.exe

Backdoor Routine

This worm executes the following commands from a remote malicious user:

  • Download and execute other files
  • Monitor cookies
  • Steal login credentials
  • Upload collected certificates and credentials
  • Update itself

It connects to the following websites to send and receive information:

  • https://{BLOCKED}azonsjdnjhffaaaae38.ru/mev/in/
  • https://{BLOCKED}hnbdaklsjsad.ru/mev/in/
  • https://{BLOCKED}iiiiooii2iio1oi.ru/mev/in/
