Arrival Details

This Worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %User Profile%\kohwe.exe → attributes are set to READONLY, HIDDEN, and SYSTEM

(Note: %User Profile% is the current user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name} on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name} on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)

It adds the following processes:

  • %System%\svchost.exe

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:

  • `=08+10

It injects itself into the following processes as part of its memory residency routine:

  • svchost.exe → executed by the malware

Autostart Technique

This Worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Taskman = %User Profile%\kohwe.exe

Other System Modifications

This Worm deletes the following files:

  • %User Profile%\kohwe.exe → if the executed file path and name is not "%User Profile%\kohwe.exe"

Propagation

This Worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:

  • torpide

It drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:

  • {Removable Drive}\torpide\gengems.exe

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

[autorun]
;garbage characters
shell\open\command=torpide\gengems.exe
