  OVERVIEW

This Worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It employs registry shell spawning by adding certain registry entries. This allows this malware to execute even when other applications are opened.

It modifies certain registry entries to disable Security Center functions. Doing this allows this malware to execute its routines without being detected. It disables Task Manager, Registry Editor, and Folder Options.

Arrival Details

This Worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Worm drops and executes the following files:

  • %Windows%\nEwb0Rn.exe
  • %System32%\WishfulThinking.exe
  • %AppDataLocal%\WINDOWS\WINLOGON.EXE
  • %AppDataLocal%\WINDOWS\SERVICES.EXE

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, where it usually is C:\Windows on all Windows operating system versions.. %AppDataLocal% is the Local Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)

It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %AppDataLocal%\winlogon.exe

(Note: %AppDataLocal% is the Local Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)

It creates the following folders:

  • %AppDataLocal%\WINDOWS
  • %Drive Letter%\nEwb0Rn

(Note: %AppDataLocal% is the Local Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Application Data on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)

Autostart Technique

This Worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
nEwb0Rn = %Windows%\nEwb0Rn.exe

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
n3wb012n{Computer Name} = %AppDataLocal%\WINDOWS\WINLOGON.EXE

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
n210bw3n = %AppDataLocal%\WINDOWS\SERVICES.EXE

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Shell = Explorer.exe "%System32%\WishfulThinking.exe"

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is Explorer.exe.)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Userinit = %System32%\userinit.exe,%System32%\WishfulThinking.exe

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is %System32%\userinit.exe.)

It employs registry shell spawning to ensure its execution when certain file types are accessed by adding the following entries:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\
exefile\shell\open\
command
(Default) = "%System32%\JawsOfLife.exe" "%1" %*

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "%1" %*.)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\
lnkfile\shell\open\
command
(Default) = "%System32%\JawsOfLife.exe" "%1" %*

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "%1" %*.)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\
piffile\shell\open\
command
(Default) = "%System32%\JawsOfLife.exe" "%1" %*

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "%1" %*.)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\
batfile\shell\open\
command
(Default) = "%System32%\JawsOfLife.exe" "%1" %*

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "%1" %*.)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\
comfile\shell\open\
command
(Default) = "%System32%\JawsOfLife.exe" "%1" %*

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "%1" %*.)

It adds the following Image File Execution Options registry entries to automatically execute itself whenever certain applications are run:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\
notepad.exe
Debugger = %System32%\cmd.exe

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\

Step 1

Trend Micro Predictive Machine Learning detects and blocks malware at the first sign of its existence, before it executes on your system. When enabled, your Trend Micro product detects this malware under the following machine learning name:

    Troj.Win32.TRX.XXPE50FFF031

Step 2

Before doing any scans, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 3

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Step 4

Identify and terminate files detected as Worm.Win32.BRONTOK.D

[ Learn More ]
  1. Windows Task Manager may not display all running processes. In this case, please use a third-party process viewer, preferably Process Explorer, to terminate the malware/grayware/spyware file. You may download the said tool here.
  2. If the detected file is displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer but you cannot delete it, restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, refer to this link for the complete steps.
  3. If the detected file is not displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer, continue doing the next steps.

Step 5

Terminate a malware/grayware process
