It executes then deletes itself afterward.

Arrival Details

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan drops the following files:

  • {8 hex characters}.tmp -> screenshot of the affected system
  • {Random Number}.dat -> (deleted afterwards)

It adds the following processes:

  • wscript.exe
  • cmd.exe /C ping 0.1.1.2 -n 1 -w 4000 > nul & del "{Folder Location of Malware}\{Malware Name}.exe"
  • %System%\PING.EXE ping 0.1.1.2 -n 1 -w 4000

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It executes then deletes itself afterward.

It injects codes into the following process(es):

  • wscript.exe (added process)

This Trojan steals the following information:

  • Screenshot of the Affected System
  • Stored usernames and passwords from the following web browsers:
    • Internet Explorer
    • Chrome
    • Firefox

This Trojan connects to the following website to send and receive information:

  • https://{BLOCKED}i.{BLOCKED}x.com
  • https://{BLOCKED}i.{BLOCKED}xapi.com
  • https://{BLOCKED}i.{BLOCKED}x.net

It does the following:

  • It queries the following registry to determine if it is being run in a vm or sandbox:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System
      • SystemBiosVersion

It checks if the following virtual machine or sandbox related module(s) is loaded in the affected system:

  • SbieDll.dll
  • Dbghelp.dll
  • Api_log.dll
  • Dir_watch.dll

It checks if the following virtual machine or sandbox related folder(s) or file(s) is present in the affected system:

  • C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\vmtoolsd.exe

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as TROJ_KORPODE.A.
