This file infector arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
It infects files by overwriting code in the entry point and saving the overwritten code in the virus body. It then appends the virus body to the host file.
It steals certain information from the system and/or the user.

This file infector arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This file infector adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:
- kkq-{random number}-mtx{random-number}
File Infection
This file infector overwrites code found in the entry point of a target file. It then appends the virus body to the target file. The overwritten code is saved in the virus body.
It searches for target files in the following folders:
- Current Directory
- %Start Menu%
- All available drive
(Note: %Start Menu% is the current user's Start Menu folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Start Menu or C:\Documents and Settings\{User name}\Start Menu on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu on Windows Vista and 7.)

Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Search and delete this file
- %Application Data%\wsr28zt32.dll
Step 3
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as PE_EXPIRO.JX. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
