Metaverse
The metaverse is a cloud distributed, multi-vendor, immersive-interactive operating environment that users can access through different categories of connected devices (both static and mobile). It uses Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies to provide an interactive layer on top of the existing internet. As proposed by current innovators and experts, it is an open platform for working and playing inside a virtual, augmented, mixed, or extended environment.
This concept is comparable to existing massively multiplayer online game (MMORPG) platforms. However, while each MMORPG represents a proprietary single virtual world, the metaverse will allow users to seamlessly move between virtual spaces together with their virtual assets. The metaverse is not merely a platform for human users; it will also be a communications layer for smart city devices through which humans and artificial intelligence can share information.
The metaverse can also be considered a part of the Internet of Experiences (IoX), owned by no one organization and accessible via a range of devices. We expect that this definition will change as more organizations get involved with the metaverse and technology develops.
We identified several security issues that may affect the metaverse, based on available knowledge. Learn more about them in our research, Metaverse or Metaworse? Cybersecurity Threats Against the Internet of Experiences.
