This backdoor arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It executes then deletes itself afterward.

This backdoor arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This backdoor drops the following files:

  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\${random}\n
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\${random}\@
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\{SID}\${random}\n
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\{SID}\${random}\@

(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\${random}
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\${random}\L
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\S-1-5-18\${random}\U
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\{SID}\${random}
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\{SID}\${random}\L
  • %System Root%\RECYCLER\{SID}\${random}\U

(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)

It executes then deletes itself afterward.

Autostart Technique

This backdoor adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

This backdoor connects to the following possibly malicious URL:

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product and note files detected as BKDR_ZACCESS.PPY

    Step 7

    Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as BKDR_ZACCESS.PPY. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.     Restore these deleted registry keys/values from backup
