This Trojan arrives as an attachment to email messages spammed by other malware/grayware or malicious users.

It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

NOTES:
This is the Trend Micro detection for specially-crafted document files that exploit the following vulnerability:

  • RTF Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (CVE-2010-3333)
If exploit is successful, it creates the following malicious file:
  • %User Temp%\setup.exe - detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_DROPPER.QCY
It also creates and opens the following non-malicious document displaying adult content:
  • %User Temp%\{malware name}.doc
The created binary file is then executed. Thus, the malicious routines of the said file are also exhibited in the system.

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Step 2

Remove malware/grayware files dropped/downloaded by TROJ_ARTIEF.SM1

    TROJ_DROPPER.CQY

Step 3

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TROJ_ARTIEF.SM1. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. Step 4
