This spyware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This spyware drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Beta\{random name 1}.exe.exe - for Windows XP and below
  • C:\ProgramData\Beta\{random name 1}.exe.exe - for Vista and above
  • C:\Users\All Users\Beta\{random name 1}.exe.exe - for Vista and above

It drops the following files:

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Beta\desktop.ini -for Windows XP and below, deletes it afterwards
  • C:\ProgramData\Beta\desktop.ini - for Vista and above, deletes it afterwards

It creates the following folders:

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Beta\ - for Windows XP and below
  • C:\ProgramData\Beta\ - for Vista and above
  • C:\Users\All Users\Beta\ - for Vista and above
