It connects to certain websites to send and receive information. It gathers information and reports it to its servers.

It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan creates the following folders:

  • %Windows%\SpeechsTracing

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, where it usually is C:\Windows on all Windows operating system versions.)

It adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:

Dropping Routine

This Trojan drops the following files:

  • %System%\TasksHostServices.exe - coinminer component, obtained from the file %System%\EnrollCertXaml.dll
  • %Windows%\SpeechsTracing\spoolsv.exe - component used for propagation, obtained from the file %System%\EnrollCertXaml.dll
  • %System%\SmssServices.exe - coinminer component, obtained from the file %System%\EnrollCertXaml.dll
  • %System%\WMASTrace.ini

It executes the dropped file. As a result, malicious routines of the dropped file are exhibited on the affected system.

It requires the following additional components to properly run:

  • %System%\EnrollCertXaml.dll - configuration file, may contain the following data:
    • C&C URLs including {domain name}
    • Coinminer files and arguments
    • Files required for Eternalblue-Doublepulsar exploit

It does the following:

  • It can receive a command in the server that downloads and executes an arbitrary file saved as %User Temp%\tmp{random}.{exe/tmp}
  • It stops and deletes the following services:

(Note: %User Temp% is the user's temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.. %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It gathers the following information and reports it to its servers:

  • MAC Address
  • IP Address
  • Computer name
  • OS version
  • CPU and GPU name

NOTES:
The value of the {Domain name} depends on the file %System%\EnrollCertXaml.dll which may contain more than one URL.

Step 1
