This Backdoor arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Backdoor drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %System%\ali.exe

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It drops the following files:

  • %System Root%\ali.html -> {deleted afterwards}

(Note: %System Root% is the Windows root folder, where it usually is C:\ on all Windows operating system versions.)

It adds the following processes:

  • {Default Browser}

It injects codes into the following process(es):

  • {Default Browser} (added process)

Autostart Technique

This Backdoor adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Active Setup\Installed Components\{B6A807N6-42DF-4W02-93E5-B156B3FA8AL1}
StubPath = "%System%\ali.exe"

Backdoor Routine

This Backdoor executes the following commands from a remote malicious user:

  • Close Socket
  • Sends reply (own ping function)
  • Deletes created registries and exits process
  • Downloads a file and executes it
  • Gets processes list
  • Terminates process
  • Deletes downloaded files

It connects to the following URL(s) to send and receive commands from a remote malicious user:

  • http://who.{BLOCKED}p.com

As of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.
