  OVERVIEW

Infection Channel:

Dropped by other malware, Downloaded from the Internet

This Worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It modifies registry entries to disable various system services. This action prevents most of the system functions to be used.

It drops copies of itself into all the removable drives connected to an affected system. It drops copies of itself into network drives. It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

However, as of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.

Installation

This Worm adds the following folders:

  • {removable or network drive}:\_
  • %Windows%\M-5050480268465846240752862405642857248045
  • %User Temp%\ns{5-random characters}.tmp

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, where it usually is C:\Windows on all Windows operating system versions.. %User Temp% is the user's temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.)

It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • {removable or network drive}:\_\DeviceConfigManager.exe

It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %Windows%\M-5050480268465846240752862405642857248045\winmgr.exe

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, where it usually is C:\Windows on all Windows operating system versions.)

It drops the following files:

  • {removable/network drive}:\.lnk -> Shortcut for DeviceConfigManager.vbs
  • {removable/network drive}:\DeviceConfigManager.vbs -> Executes _\DeviceConfigManager.exe
  • {removable/network drive}:\autorun.inf -> Automatically executes _\DeviceConfigManager.exe on plug-in
  • {removable/network drive}:\_\DeviceConfigManager.exe
  • %User Temp%\Choriamb.dat -> Encrypted malicious code
  • %User Temp%\ns{5-random character}.tmp\System.dll
  • %User Temp%\{random filename}.bat -> deletes the original malware file and is deleted after execution
  • %User Temp%\executions.dll -> Decrypts the malicious code and injects it into itself

(Note: %User Temp% is the user's temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.)

It adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:

  • t30

Autostart Technique

This Worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Microsoft Windows Manager = %Windows%\M-5050480268465846240752862405642857248045\winmgr.exe

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Microsoft Windows Manager = %Windows%\M-5050480268465846240752862405642857248045\winmgr.exe

Other System Modifications

This Worm modifies registry entries to disable the following system services:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\
services\WinDefend
Start = 4

It creates the following registry entry(ies) to bypass Windows Firewall:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
services\SharedAccess\Parameters\
FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\
List
%Windows%\M-5050480268465846240752862405642857248045\winmgr.exe = %Windows%\M-5050480268465846240752862405642857248045\winmgr.exe:*:Enabled:Microsoft Windows Manager

Propagation

This Worm drops copies of itself into all the removable drives connected to an affected system.

It drops copies of itself into network drives.

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

The said .INF file contains the following strings:

{garbage strings}
[autorun]
{garbage strings}
icon=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,4
{garbage strings}
open=_\DeviceConfigManager.exe
{garbage strings}

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Step 3

Identify and terminate files detected as WORM_PHORPIEX.YOV

[ Learn More ]
  1. Windows Task Manager may not display all running processes. In this case, please use a third-party process viewer, preferably Process Explorer, to terminate the malware/grayware/spyware file. You may download the said tool here.
  2. If the detected file is displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer but you cannot delete it, restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, refer to this link for the complete steps.
