This worm arrives by connecting affected removable drives to a system. It may be dropped by other malware. It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

It drops copies of itself into all the removable drives connected to an affected system.

This worm arrives by connecting affected removable drives to a system.

It may be dropped by other malware.

It may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %Application Data%\ohydy.exe

(Note: %Application Data% is the current user's Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista and 7.)

It is injected into the following processes running in memory:

  • EXPLORER.EXE

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Taskman = %Application Data%\ohydy.exe

Propagation

This worm drops copies of itself into all the removable drives connected to an affected system.

It sends copies of itself to target recipients using the following instant-messaging (IM) applications:

  • MSN Messenger

    • ff.{BLOCKED}u3.com
  • The reply may contain command to visit the following websites to download other malicious files:
    • http://{BLOCKED}9.92.250/pr.exe - detected as WORM_BUZUS.ARR
    • http://{BLOCKED}on.com/backbot.exe - detected as TROJ_PUVBED.Z
    • http://{BLOCKED}on.com/loaderadv600.exe - detected as TROJ_BURNIX.SMEP
    • http://{BLOCKED}dat.info/rp020832.exe - detected as TROJ_CUTWAIL.SMQ

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
