This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan adds the following processes:

  • "%System%\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe" -c "&{'YUXRZ7GuZyFdn0vB2i8IN6Tv29pc9fcKDVA3WGFnD5ScIZnt7pcOku1TxqEL+WIGmxQpSond';$HRfF='{Base64 encoded command}';$RFnG='{Base64 encoded command}';$ryVIql=$HRfF+$RFnG;$zDDWaH=[System.Text.Encoding]::ASCII.GetString([System.Convert]::FromBase64String($ryVIql));$ryVIql=$zDDWaH;iex($ryVIql)}";
  • "%System%\regsvr32.exe" %AppDataLocal\TQQwncTdK\EJjuTpwiYA.PHB

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It creates the following folders:

It saves the files it downloads using the following names:

  • %AppDataLocal%\TQQwncTdK\EJjuTpwiYA.PHB → detected as TrojanSpy.Win64.EMOTET.SMYXCFC

It saves downloaded files into the said created folder.
