(MS11-042) Vulnerabilities in Distributed File System Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2535512)

Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS) was found to have vulnerabilities, the more severe of which, could allow remote code execution when an attacker sends a malicious DFS response to a DFS request by a user. Successful exploit of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code and completely take control of a system. This security update is rated Critical for all supported editions of Windows XP and Windows Server and Important for all supported editions of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 for 32-bit Systems, Windows 7 for x64-based Systems, Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems, and Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-based Systems. Standard default firewall settings can protect networks from attacks originating outside enterprise perimeter. Firewall best practices recommend minimizing the number of ports exposed in systems connecting to the internet.
